Chapter Twelve

Izzy

Izzy eyed Rose across the table as they sat outside eating slices of stone-baked cheese pizza. An outdoor gas heater crackled beside them, warming one side of her face and spreading a heady glow around the plaza.

An absent smile danced across her lips as she soaked in the warmth and the lights and the smell of the pizza ovens behind her. Spending time with Rose like this had made her almost forget about what she was missing back home.

“Are you busy tomorrow?” Izzy asked Rose as she ate.

Rose shot her a pointed look, resting her elbows against the edge of the table. “Um, I think I’ll have to check my diary, but I might be able to squeeze something in between sleeping and reading.”

Izzy chuckled. “Right, of course. I was just wondering if you wanted to come over and do some baking with me. I was planning to do it anyway, but you know, some company would be nice.”

Rose gave her a soft, dimpled smile. “I’d like that. Though I will warn you, I’m a terrible baker.”

Izzy waved her hand. “I’m sure you’re not that bad.”

“Just don’t leave me in charge of the oven, and we should be fine.”

“Noted,” Izzy said, smiling over her pizza. “I can show you how to make vanilla biscuits, or gingerbread, or my favourite banana and walnut loaf.”

Rose arched a brow. “Any one of those sounds good,” she said.

“Or all of them,” Izzy teased. “’Tis the season of indulgence, after all. What time would be good for you tomorrow?”

Rose shrugged. “Honestly, whenever. I don’t exactly have any plans. Though I have been waking up later than usual since term ended.”

“Then why don’t you come over at four? I’d like to give the kitchen a bit of a clean before we start. You do not want to see the absolute bombshell it is right now.”

“Sounds good to me. I’ll be there.”

“You’d better be,” Izzy said with a wink. “Or I’m keeping all the biscuits to myself.”

Rose gasped, feigning shock. “You would never!”

Izzy arched a brow, biting into her pizza instead of replying.

Rose shook her head, a playful smile dancing at the corners of her mouth as the lights glistened overhead, the gas heater blasting warm air over them with an ambient crackle. There were a few other families seated around the plaza, their voices a low murmur against the wind and the instrumental rendition of The First Noel currently playing over the speakers.

“You were right,” Rose said, drawing Izzy’s gaze towards her. She was sitting with her head pointing up at the sky, flurries of snow framing the delicate edges of her face. “This is way better than any Christmas movie.”

Izzy blinked at her, skimming her gaze over Rose’s softened features, suddenly feeling like there was too much distance between them, too much noise and clamour to distract her from the girl in front of her. A knot formed around her heart, making it harder to breathe as her mind flicked back to last year;
